My hope is that one day FriendlyBrown will have it's own site, but for now it'll join Kelly Kramer in one big site of awesomeness.

If you're a super friend, you'll join this new blog, because I won't be posting over here anymore and I'm going to miss you! Things are a little bare over there right now, as I'm doing some housecleaning but I promise I'll do some decorating soon. Free free to check out my portfolio (which I just have TOO much to add to right now that I'll need another glass of wine just to think about), or drop me a note if you're feeling frisky. I'm hoping to add even more FriendlyBrown features, like a gallery, but I'm just too swamped right now to make everything neat and tidy. I probably won't be blogging as much right now, and I get things set up, but just know that I haven't forgotten about you!

See those black things up in the tree? Birds! Freaking birds! On a nighttime snow stroll to the plaza, I came across these guys, and was terrified! They were just sitting there, staring at me. I tried to scare them away, but they stuck around. It was weird. Spring, where are you?

Since this last storm was so massive, I'm assuming all of you are pretty tired of snow by now, huh? Ugh, me too. I've felt SO unmotivated lately, and it sucks because I'm spending so much time indoors, I could be getting so much done! Good thing I have awesome friends that will make cinnamon rolls and coffee with bailey's on a Sunday afternoon for me!

And to top it all off- we watched Wild Wild West. Job well done, crew. Thanks for making the winter tolerable.

new Thai food on Lark

This weekend we ventured out into the cold to check out the new Thai/ Japanese/Vietnamese place on Lark, Kinnaree. It really was fantastic, and although I don't know much about Thai food, I really enjoyed myself.

We started with the fresh spring rolls with chicken and shrimp.

Matt had the steak teriyaki with vegetables. It was a good sized portion with really great flavor. Thanks for letting me taste it!

I had the curry noodles. It was served with scallops and shrimp with crunchy sprouts and fresh herbs. It was a HUGE portion, but I finished it all because it was too delicious.

I definitely think we'll be back!

hot toddy- do it.

I was introduced to a fabulous recipe for a hot toddy yesterday. It has the perfect combination of citrus and sweetness, and is guaranteed to keep you warm on a day like today!

Here are the ingredients:

And here's what it looks like when it's all gone!

Recipe:

1/4 cup Fresh Squeezed Meyers Lemon Juice

1/2 cup Fresh Squeezed Blood Orange Juice

1 teaspoon Honey

1 Shot of Makers Mark Bourbon

1 Cinnamon Stick

Hot Water

I didn't use nearly as much juice in mine, and still really enjoyed it. Mix the juices, honey, and bourbon together. Add hot water to fill your mug, and garnish with the cinnamon stick. I originally thought the cinnamon wasn't a necessity, but it really does make a huge difference.

This is my definitely my new favorite thing. Do yourself a favor and warm up with one today (and invite me over!).

I've been eyeing up this yarn for awhile now, and purchased it a few months ago. It's a beautiful, soft variegated yarn in white, yellow, orange and teal. I finally got to start another pair of gloves, as my holiday orders have died down. Can't wait to finish and list these!

winter wonder tree

Ok, so I am NOT a fan of winter. I'll admit it. Especially after the last two weeks, I am TOTALLY over snow, and wouldn't mind if it didn't snow the rest of the year. The constant shoveling and scraping and trudging through the snow just doesn't amuse me anymore. Enough already!

That being said, I was doing some errands after work last night, and saw the prettiest tree. It was covered with ice, and since it had been flurrying all day the snow just stuck to it like glitter. Yeah, I get fascinated with trees covered in glitter. Get over it.

So, I took too many pictures of this tree, and put them together. Very Warhol-esque. It's cliche, whatever.

Off the needles- gloves "once removed"

Today I'm bringing you a super special pair of gloves that I just finished. They're for my first cousin once removed (or something like that... we're not quite sure how we're related!) She asked me to make these FOREVER ago, but with the holiday rush, I'm just getting them finished now. I can't wait to go over and give them to her. I don't see her and my adorable cousins twice (?) removed often enough!

It's quite an art, and this artist just totally nails it. AND, it makes me miss the city like crazy. How could you not love a place as beautiful as this?

Sorry guys. I know it's been awhile since I posted last, but I decided to tackle some long overdue non-FriendlyBrown projects this week. On the top of that list was sprucing up my photography web site, and helping Matt set up a web site as well.

You can see the results below, and I must say, I'm pretty happy with them! I turned to WordPress to help me develop something that was easy to implement, and still look cool. I actually bought a theme for my web site (it's called "Dandelion" and was around 30 bucks). For Matt's site we used a free theme, and by using his logo and photograph, I think we did a great job of personalizing it for him.

I'm nowhere near getting all of my photographs onto the site, which is why my portfolio section is lacking... a lot. I'm actually taking a break from going through my THOUSANDS of photos to write this, but I know it's going to take a few weeks before I have them all organized and ready to publish.

It was a winter wonderland this weekend in Albany. I was fortunate enough to be free during the middle of the storm, so I put on my psychadelic snow boots and hit the town!

It's not Christmas anymore, but those sure do still look pretty!

The snow was just laying on the tree branches so beautifully!

I know that I have featured these shops before on this blog, but now I actually own some goodies from them. Matt was awesome enough to buy me two of my Etsy favorites for Christmas this year. I've been eying these particular pieces from afar, and am SO glad that I get to wear them every day!

First up is this amazing ginkgo leaf ring by esdesigns.

For years I have had a fascination with gingko leaves, ever since reading a poem that featured them. I actually lost the poem for years, and looking at this ring reminded me of it so much that I went on a quest for it. I'm going to share the whole thing here, because I just found it, and it really means so much to me:

So, if I haven't told you already, I got a new camera for my birthday/Christmas, and am SUPER psyched about it! Only problem, my current camera case is old and not very stylish! Etsy to the rescue!

I'm really looking for some input here, because I am SUPER indecisive! I spent some time on Etsy the other day, and here are my top three choice for a brand spanking new camera bag!

I made a lot of gloves this past year, but none are as special as the pair I made for Matt for Christmas. I was actually too late in making them, as he went out a few days before Christmas and bought a pair, but I like to think that these are WAY better!

By far the most difficult pair to make, they feature half fingers, and an optional mitten covering for really cold days! Maybe one day when I have elves working for me, I'll be able to sell these in the Etsy shop.

Sometimes, time floors me. It always surprises me to look back and see how things have changed. Take for instance last week at this time. The snow was just beginning to fall, and Albany would soon be covered with a lot of snow. Today, it's bright, and sunny, and the majority of snow has melted. Crazy times.

Let's take a trip back in time one week shall we?

The park near our apartment. I loved how the blowing snow looked like sparkles!

FriendlyBrown- A Year in Pictures

Alright 2010- It's been great, but I'm ready to see what 2011 has to offer! As we round out this year, I thought it would be fun to go back through my thousands of pictures from the year, and pick out my favorite from each month. Hope you enjoy!

The first snow of the year- it was so beautiful! Had a blast taking the camera out!

Second snow- still beautiful, probably because it didn't affect my commute home!

March brought a walkabout with CAPow in downtown Albany. One regret of the year- not doing more of these!

April brought sunshine! You know it's spring when you see these little yellow flowers blooming everwhere!

Tulip Fest always happens in May, and this year was exceptionally beautiful!

Yay for festival weather!

I finally made it to the Saratoga racetrack this year. So glad I went!

Did a few small tours of the Capital District in August, and was amazed by the simplest beauty.

The last festival of the summer for us was moe.down in Central NY. LOVED this bumper sticker!

Had a really awesome day walking around the city in October. Here's Yoko's wish tree at MOMA.

Got to go back to the city AGAIN in November and really enjoyed walking the Highline!

I rounded out the year baking cookies with mom. Best. Christmas. Ever. I took a lot of pictures of cookies this month, but none are as special as this one. :)

12 Months of FriendlyBrown- July through December

Yesterday I told you about my favorite knitting projects from the first half of 2010. Today, I'll round out the final 6 months with my favorite pics!

July- I was ALL about knitting poolside with a beverage!

August brought this amazing color combination!

I loved the pop of color in these September gloves.

I'm always inspired from whatever is around me. In October, it was red wine!

The leaves were fallen in November, and they made the perfect props for a back deck photo shoot!

These gloves were made for a friend's Christmas gift. Hope she liked them!

12 Months of FriendlyBrown- January through June

Well, the year is just about rounding up right now, and I thought I'd share what I've been up to these past 12 months! It's really been a great ride this year. I was able to accomplish a lot! Here are my favorites from the first half of this year:

I started out the year with a bang with this child's knitted set. Turned out SO cute!

February brought a pair of half- finger gloves. Pretty annoying to make, but TOTALLY worth it!

March was all about the matching mug cozies!

Loved this color combination in April!

As the weather got warmer, I moved to iPhone cozies. I loved this one in multiple colors!

Nobody wants fingerless gloves in June, so I created this mug cozy pattern. Loved the bright yellow- perfect for summer!

A Very Kramer Christmas

I live in Albany, NY. My family lives in Boyertown, PA. Although we don't have too many crazy traditions for the holidays, Christmas is my favorite time to spend with them. I has an amazing time this weekend just getting to spend some quality time with them. Thanks guys for being the best family ever. I miss you already! Is it Christmas again yet?

I'm really excited that it was featured both online AND in print. This is the first time FriendlyBrown has been featured in a publication. I totally feel like a proud mama!

December Laughs on Lark

I was SO excited for this months LOL. If you haven't heard me talk about this event before, it's a comedy show that Matt Kelly and Jaye McBride have been putting on for the past couple of months. Each month features new comedians. It's held at Elda's on Lark Street at 9pm on the second Wednesday of each month (usually!). This one was super duper for me because: it was probably the best line up yet, I had a new camera to shoot it with, and we had the sign printed that I created, just for the event!

I was really pleased that my camera was able to capture some cool moments during the night, despite how dark it was in there!

Here's that sign that I made! You can't really tell from the picture, but the bird (lark) on the branch is laughing!

Kramer cookie weekend- French macaroons

And to round out the end of the Kramer cookie weekend, we have CAPow from Windshield diaries. Crystal ALSO made cookies for me on my birthday, because she knows I love them SO much! These are a different kind of macaroon, and are made with egg whites and almond flour with a buttercream filling. They are extremely delicate and so tasty! Crystal made a chocolate and peanut butter combination for me- my favorite!

Next up on our Kramer cookie weekend- Deanna Fox from Silly Goose Farm! Deanna is hands-down, one of the most talented ladies I know, and am so glad that I get to work with her on a regular basis!

For my birthday, she brought over some chocolate chip cookies, because she's just THAT CUTE! They were delicious of course, and came in a cute white bag with a cream ribbon ( I didn't take a picture of that because I basically destroyed it trying to get to the cookies!). I took those babies home and (before I gobbled them all down) got them all set up for a photo shoot. Hope she likes thesse ;)

Kramer cookie weekend- coconut macaroons

I must say- I have super talented friends! Very recently I've received 3 different batches of cookies from 3 amazing ladies. I want to showcase them in their own posts, because... well, they deserve it!

First up- Miriam Paska- Queen of the macaroon!

I worked with Miriam over the year, and always marveled at all the crafty and yummy things she comes up with! She recently approached me with a batch of macaroons that she wanted me to photograph. Eeeeeeee! I was so excited because a) I LOVE photographing food, and b) because I got to eat them afterward! For this photo shoot I was actually home in PA, so I got the help of mom and Caitlin to make these pictures perfect! I love the look of the curtains in my parent's living room, and the plates my mom had were adorable. Also- we chowed down on these goodies after I was finished shooting, and they. were. amazing! the best and the worst thing about last week...

Last week one of my favorite bands, moe. was playing at the Armory, which is just a few short blocks from our apartment. That's the best part. The worst part? Being really too sick to go, but going anyway, and paying the price a week later.

I was so high on cold meds that I don't remember too much from the show, but I did manage to get a few shots of the happenings in the Armory that night. During the second set they brought out some aliens, and they danced on stage. It was a pretty awesome night (from what I remember!). Take it from me kids- even if you're sick, go and have fun, because you only live once!

Here's a sneak peak at two new designs I've been working on. I finished these about a week ago, and thank god I did, because I just got bombarded with a bunch of Christmas orders. I've been a busy little bee, but took some time out in the freezing December weather to take some shots for Etsy.

I got a new camera for my birthday/Christmas, and it made these shots SUPER easy. The display on the back swivels around so that you can take a picture of yourself, and see what exactly is in frame. No more trial and error!

I took these on a tripod with a cable release cord....

As I told you yesterday, Matt took me to New World Bistro for my birthday dinner. Ahhhh- it was excellent! Best part about it? There was plenty of light at our table, so that I can share it with all of you! Thankfully I brought my camera!

We started off with yummy bread. It was so hard not to eat too much!

I decided on a lemon-basil mojito. I thought it would compliment all the seafood I was about to devour.

Clams! Holy shit these were good. They were in this amazing broth with chorizo and lots of fresh herbs. Good thing we had that bread to soak up all the juices!

Matt got the steak frites. I don't even know really what was included on the plate. It was just- delicious!

I got the hemp nut crusted salmon with greens and corn pudding. I'm salivating just thinking about it. There was an apply chutney on top that complimented the salmon perfectly, and a spicy sauce that brought it all together.

mmmmm... dessert! This is a Mexican cinnamon creme brulee. Pefection!

Sheesh! It's been a week and a half since my birthday, and I can believe I haven't told you all about it yet! It realy was an awesome day filled with good food, and great friends!

The day started off with breakfast (an egg scramble with sausage, peppers, and cheese) made by Matt Kelly.

After a ginormous "Thanksgiving" dinner with my family, the last thing I wanted to do was eat, but we decided to go out to breakfast the next morning. I STILL wasn't hungry, but agreed to go. We decided on the Jukebox Cafe, which is a 50's themed restaurant that I waitressed at over summer vacations from college.

It definitely brought back some weird memories, and I'm actually pretty glad nobody there recognized me (even though I DID wear my sunglasses throughout breakfast, like a weirdo to make sure that didn't happen). I took some pictures of the meal, since they do an awesome job with the food there.

Oh I remember wiping down those tables...

Thanksgiving- Part Deux

While we hosted Thanksgiving at our apartment, I still wanted to go home and have a special meal with my family, so we packed up early made the trip down to beautiful Boyertown, PA. We had a great time, despite it only being for one night.

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been MIA lately. I had a super busy week that I can't wait to tell you about (birthday celebrations, comedy shows, cookies, new designs and more!), but for now I just had to tell you about the blog I've been featured in!

"My" tree

Let's take a journey back in time. The time- 1983. The place- Boyertown, PA. Two new young parents bring their wonderful first born baby girl home. They decide to plant a tree, and watch it grow up alongside her.

Those people were my parents, and I am that girl! It's 27 years later, and on a recent trip back home, this tree was absolutely amazing. I think it was a great idea for my parents to plant a tree when I was born (it was probably the spring after I was born though, because it's too cold in December to plant a tree!), because it's been a lot of fun watching it grow.

I have to say, in my 27 years, I've never seen this tree look so pretty. I'm pretty sure I was lucky enough to be home at the peak of it's foliage this year! Oh also- it's my birthday today, so I guess that's why I'm bring this up today :)

This year, we hosted Thanksgiving in our Center Square apartment, and the Kelly's were nice enough to join us! Here are some of the one million pictures I took that day:

Alright, so here are the place settings. Note the super awesome paper plates from Target, and my amazing napkin folding skills!

We had cheese and crackers, because we're fancy.

And Matt's dad cooked an awesome turkey, but how GROSS does this look?!

There was food... too much food.

And we played with some pigs (worry not folks, I have a LOT more pictures where that came from. Expect another post about pigs this week!)

And Crystal came over and brough a WHOLE BOX of the most delicious French macaroons ever! Pumpkin and cranberry!

I don't know about you, but I'm STILL too full from this weekend's food activites to even think about blogging about it. Don't worry though, I've got my files currently processing, and should have something to show you tomorrow!

In the meantime, I wanted to share some pictures of a door with you. Yep, a door. My mom has a real eye for pretty things. More specifically, normal things that I would like to photograph to bring out their wonderfulness (is that a word?). Anyway- She's been talking about this door that she sees everyday on her walks around the neighborhood, so when I was home the other week, I just HAD to see this thing!

Caffe Vero

I recently checked out the newest business on Lark Street, and as I'm writing this post I'm really getting thirsty for some coffee! Our coffee maker broke the other day, and even though I'm not a huge coffee drinker, I do like a cup in the morning. Going through withdraw!

Anyway, we checked out Caffe Vero the other day, and loved it! I'll definitely be going back, especially because it's the closest coffee joint to our apartment!

They don't have much right now, but everything is super yummy!

This is Matt's white chocolate latte. They do this fancy stuff with the foam, that kind of scares me because it seems really fancy. I got over that quickly when I started taking pictures of it though!

Mmmm... chai latte and FriendlyBrown gloves! After that day, chai is Matt's new favorite. I've converted him!

The atmosphere here is really cool and nice and quiet. It'll definitely be coming back!

Laughing on Lark Street

Last week was the November edition of Laughs on Lark. If you haven't been, you should check out the next one in December. This event was created by Matt Kelly and Jaye McBride. They wanted a place to do comedy in the neighborhood, so they created Laughs on Lark. They choose 4 comics each month, and put on a 2 hour show at Elda's on Lark Street. It's an awesome time getting some laughs, drinking big glasses of wine (or vodka tonic if you're CAPow!), and sitting on comfy couches!

I got a SUPER close spot behind the comics this time around, so my pictures didn't turn out so great. I decided to mess around with them in Lightroom, and came out with some cool stuff.

If I haven't said it before, packaging is a huge part of a buyer's Etsy experience. As a person that both sells AND buys on Etsy, I see how important it is to show off your items. I love receiving my Etsy purchases, because they're not just things that I buy, they're like little presents to myself!

I always make sure my handwarmers go out with some prettty wrapping and a personalized thank you note to the buyer. This way, they feel special, and will remember me the next time they need a knitted item. I thought it would be fun to show you some recent packages I've sent out:

I currently live in Albany, NY but I'm originally from a small town in Pennsylvania called Boyertown. I don't get to make it home too often, but I was fortunate enough to make a visit last weekend. I've really been missing home lately, and was feeling super nostalgic. I grabbed my phone and used my super hipstamatic app to create some vintage images of where I grew up.

While I was waiting for a washing machine at the laundomat last night, I looked down at my keychain and was totally horrified. It's UGLY! I'm not even going to show you a picture of it, it's so ugly. turned into tragedy when i discovered that i lost one of the memory cards for my camera. i spent a beautiful afternoon in central park a week ago. i shot exactly one million pictures of fall leaves and was super excited by what i captured. i can't even describe how amazing that day was. now, it's all in my memory, and you'll never get to see it!

Between some rainy autumn days have been some absolutely gorgeous and warm fall nights. Matt surprised me with some ballin' steaks the other night, and we headed outside to grill them up and enjoy a beautiful (and warm- I didn't even need a coat!) autumn night...

Standing in line waiting for the guys from Ghoul Poon the other night at Northern Lights, I found this gem:

Yes, that's a monster, burning up a city, holding his green card. Immediately, a million thoughts ran through my head. Was this particular artist trying to say that all foreigners are monsters? Were they saying that our treatment of foreigners MAKE them monsters? Maybe someone drew the monster picture, and then someone ELSE added the green card. Regardless, it made me think, making this a great piece of urban art.

I spent this past Sunday cooking lots of treats, but today I'll tell you about the awesome granola bars I made. This recipe was super easy... and delicious! A full version of the recipe can be seen here. Can't wait for these to be my 3:00 snack this week!

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups old fashioned oats
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
5 tablespoons applesauce
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup Splenda brown sugar (I only used a tablespoon or so)
1/2 cup additions (I used Crasins and sliced almonds)

Additions can be any combination of: raisins, dates, cranberries, sunflower seeds, chopped nuts, etc.

Directions: Combine all ingredients. Pat down into a 8x8 pan that has been greased ( I used canola oil). Bake at 325 for 18-22 minutes (my batch was finished at 20 minutes). Let the pan cool down for 10 minutes, then cut into 9 servings. Enjoy!

Just a quick back story on the name of these gloves. I have a friend named Meagan. Interestingly enough, the first three letters of her name also are the first three letters of the word "meat." When you've had one too many whiskey and cokes, the two can get confused... easily. Now, she's known as Meaty!

Anyway, I made a pair of gloves for her last year, but she's asked me to make another pair! Here's the work in progress...
